Heart Health and Testosterone Therapy

As men get older, they often see a reduction in their testosterone levels. After age 30, most men begin to see changes in their sex drive, energy levels, and ambition. This is a very common problem that can be solved with testosterone supplementation and replacement therapy

Male andropause, also known as male menopause, will affect most men after the age of 50. Symptoms of andropause include:

  • Lower energy levels
  • Feelings of sadness or depression
  • Lower sex drive
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Reduced muscle mass
  • Weight gain
  • Loss of body hair
  • Osteoporosis

Lower testosterone levels pose a threat to more than just your sex drive and energy levels, though. It also can play a role in other health problems such as hypertension, increased risk of heart disease, and obesity.

Study Underscores Testosterone Benefits

A 2016 study from the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute in Salt Lake City,

researched 755 men between the ages of 58 and 78. Each patient had severe coronary artery disease. The patients were divided into three different groups: One group received no testosterone injections; one group received a medium dose of injections, and; one group received a high dose of testosterone injections.

After three years of the study, 125 patients who received no testosterone injections suffered some form of a major cardiac event. This is compared to 22 men who suffered the same type of cardiac events but received high doses of testosterone injections.

Dr. Brent Muhlestein, MD, co-director of cardiovascular research at the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute, said this study proves that testosterone injections do not increase a patient’s risk of suffering cardiovascular trauma such as a heart attack or stroke.

This study is similar to one performed in 2015 by the same institution. The 2015 Intermountain study found that administering doses of testosterone to patients did not increase their risk of heart attack or stroke when they had no pre-existing conditions.

  • Improved sexual performance
  • Increased muscle mass
  • Lowered levels of body fat
  • Improvements in cognition and memory
  • Better mood

Many providers will recommend changing your daily habits and lifestyle choices before undergoing testosterone therapy. It is a good idea to adopt better habits such as eating healthier, exercising more often, reducing stressors in your life, and getting longer, better sleep. But when these changes in your lifestyle still do not improve your quality of life, it might be time to consider testosterone replacement or supplementation. Consult with your provider whether this course of action is healthy for you.
