Hormone Therapy for Women.

One of the most significant changes in the aging process is the decline in hormone levels, including estrogen, testosterone and progesterone. Low hormone levels in women can cause trouble sleeping, weight gain, decreased desire, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, fatigue, foggy memory and low energy. Living with these symptoms can be miserable and in some cases cause depression.

Many women who are peri-menopausal, menopausal and post-menopausal suffer from hormone imbalance. The median age of onset for perimenopause is 47.5 years and most women spend one-third to half of their life in post menopause. This is a large portion of your life and health dependent upon how your body acclimates to the change of life.

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement (BHRT) is a natural solution to restore hormone balance, regain your quality of life and help you feel like you did before the side effects of aging and hormone decline. Bioidentical hormones are a natural plant-based replica of the hormones that our bodies produced when we were younger. Bioidentical hormones have very few side effects, unlike synthetic hormones. You may have been recommended synthetic hormone therapies, however synthetic do not offer the same benefits as natural bioidentical hormone replacement.

Estrogen prevents symptoms of hot flashes, mood swings, urogenital atrophy, decreased libido, and decreased collagen production of the skin. Long-term, estrogen replacement protects against heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease and osteoporosis. Estrogen therapy should be used in conjunction with progesterone to balance the two hormones safely.

Low estrogen: The most common reason for low estrogen in women is menopause or surgical removal of the ovaries. Symptoms of low estrogen include:

  • Menstrual periods that are less frequent or that stop
  • Hot flashes (suddenly feeling very warm) and/or night sweats
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Dryness and thinning of the vagina
  • Low sexual desire
  • Mood swings
  • Dry skin
  • Some women get menstrual migraine, a bad headache right before their menstrual period, because of the drop-in estrogen.

Excess estrogen can lead to these problems, among others:

  • Weight gain, mainly in your waist, hips, and thighs
  • Menstrual problems, such as light or heavy bleeding
  • Worsening of premenstrual syndrome
  • Fibrocystic breasts (non-cancerous breast lumps)
  • Fibroids (noncancerous tumors) in the uterus
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of sex drive
  • Feeling depressed or anxious

Progesterone: Natural progesterone replacement has a mild tranquilizing effect and enhances an overall sense of well-being. Progesterone reduces symptoms of PMS and menopause as well as acting as a natural diuretic. Progesterone protects against uterine and breast cancer as well as osteoporosis.

The testosterone hormone is necessary for sustaining libido, muscle mass, and bone density. Benefits of testosterone therapy include enhancement of skin and hair texture, increased energy, decreased body fat, increased sexual desire and improved blood glucose levels. Long-term benefits include protection against heart disease, and reduced risk of diabetes.

Testosterone decreases naturally as a woman ages because the ovaries are producing fewer hormones. Levels of other hormones, such as estrogen, also reduce over time, especially when a woman reaches menopause.

Problems with the ovaries and adrenal glands can also cause lower levels of testosterone. A woman may have reduced levels if her ovaries have been removed, for example, or if she has adrenal insufficiency, which means that the adrenal glands do not work correctly.

Testosterone replacement can be administered by injections, pellets, or a topical cream. These treatments have the same effect on women as on men: raising energy levels, decreasing fatigue, and increasing sex drive.

Low testosterone can cause one or more of the following symptoms in women:

  • sluggishness
  • muscle weakness
  • fatigue
  • sleep disturbances
  • reduced sex drive
  • decreased sexual satisfaction
  • weight gain
  • fertility issues
  • irregular menstrual cycles
  • vaginal dryness
  • loss of bone density

The thyroid hormone is responsible for our body’s metabolism and energy. Symptoms of a lack of thyroid hormone can result in cold hands and feet, constipation, hair loss, increased cholesterol, weight gain, fatigue and dry skin. Besides reducing all of these symptoms, other great benefits of thyroid are protection against cardiovascular disease and improved memory.

Clinical studies have shown that DHEA has a profound effect on the immune system, sex drive, and brain function. Other health benefits include helping the body cope with stress, prevention of free radicals, and reduction of body fat and cholesterol, thereby preventing heart disease.
