The first thing you need to know about working out to lose weight is to figure out why you are losing weight in the first place. Before picking up your first dumbbell or having your first tai chi moment, decide your reasons for losing weight. Everyone wants those extra pounds to get lost and stay lost. Everyone wants to feel great, but not everyone puts their goals and thoughts into action. Some figure out how to lose those unwanted pounds and then like their workout regimen so much, they decide they might as well keep it as part of their routine and use it to stay fit always. Some lose the weight and then forget about it for a while. But regardless of what you are planning to do with your routine, think about why you are doing it and your whole reasoning behind the number of pounds you want to lose.

Is it about feeling better about yourself? Is it about getting a hotter body? Is it about a fat comment someone made to you? Is it about getting that bikini body? Is it about looking ripped? Or is it simply about looking better than your ex’s new SO? These are all factors you need to be thinking about and rule out the bad reasons from the good ones because in the end, you just have you. You are the one who will have to face your body at the end of the day and what you look like in the mirror. Make sure that you are going on this workout regimen for all the right reasons—you and no one else before you begin. If that is the case and you are ready, you have picked the right time to start. Now many places have suggested that if you make it a part of your new year’s resolution, it probably won’t happen. They are probably right, but who says you have to listen to them? Many places also offer an organized, charted progress report as part of the plan to keep track of your accomplishments and help you get to that goal. Some who love exercising to lose weight can’t help it but go on those scales and while it’s possible to practice this on a healthy basis, some go overboard and before they know it, they let a number dictate their whole lives. Be careful whatever road you take and make the right choices for you without feeling like you are forcing anything. It is a good idea to keep in mind that while a little competition can be helpful and is sometimes invited, to lose weight the healthy way, compete with only yourself.
